FAQ’S

Here are the most frequently asked questions … click on the + to read the answer.

Do you have internet and cell phone available?

I have wireless internet and you can Skype from here.  Verizon and Sprint phones work from the house and studio however ATT only works at the bottom of the drive way, ½ mile away.  I have a land line and fax which will work with pre-paid phone calling cards.

What about television?

I have streaming internet for Netflix movies and internet TV access but no cable.  Also, of course, DVD movies are an option.

Do you allow pets?

I love them and have 2 of my own (Beaux the dog and Cappy the cat) but unfortunately we cannot accommodate any additional animals.

Can you accommodate special dietary needs?

The meals will be homemade and delicious with plenty of fresh vegetable and fruit options available at all times.  Unfortunately, I cannot accommodate specific food preferences or dietary requirements or handle medical reactions/allergies.

What about alcoholic beverages?

You are welcome to bring a bottle to keep in your room and share with others if you wish.  There will also be a bar available stocked with various wine, beer and hard liquor with mixers.  This will be run on the honor system and you will be asked to keep track of what you drink on a sign up sheet.  Totals will be calculated at the end of your stay and billed to your account.

What kind of clothing should I bring?

The weather here can be very changeable and even in the summer the nights are crisp so bring some warm layers, a hat and some gloves.  Keep your wardrobe simple.  All you really need are casual clothes for work and outdoor activities and maybe one little dress up number.  In the footwear department, clogs and/or tennis shoes for the studio, hiking boots and some dancing shoes should round out the picture nicely.  Each bedroom has at least one dresser and limited hanging space available.

Is there a laundry facility available?

There is a washer and dryer in the studio you may use.  Additionally, aprons will be provided in the studio.  This should cut down on the amount of laundry you will need to do during your stay.

What if I have physical limitations?

The main living and dining spaces in my home are on the second floor and two of the bedrooms are on the third so stair climbing is an unavoidable part of daily life here.  Regrettably, I do not have an elevator or wheel chair access available.  Also, please be aware that the altitude here is 8200 ft. above sea level and the air is thin.  If you use oxygen or have difficulty breathing at high elevation please consult with your physician to make sure that this workshop would be suitable for you.

Do I need to bring my own tools?

I will provide all the hand tools you need, however if you have a special favorite that you cannot live without please feel free to bring it along but be sure it has your name on it.

What is the charge for material and firing?

Material and firing charges for one 4 ft. square mural are included in the workshop price.  Each student will be allotted 25 lbs. of clay as well as the colored stains and glazes necessary to complete the project.  If a student wishes to make more items, then the extra material and firing charges will be billed accordingly.  For an additional price, shipping can be arranged for pieces that need to be dried and fired after the workshop ends.

What skill level is required for this workshop?

I am happy to accept any skill level.  The itinerary will be geared primarily toward intermediate and advanced students however, the small group size ensures that novice participants can easily be assimilated and can also provide the refreshing quality of “a beginner’s mind” which often opens new creative doors for the entire group.

What advance preparation should I do before I arrive?

Prepare a short statement about yourself, your life and your work to share with the group.  You can read this or bring notes an ad lib but a little background material will help us get acquainted.
Bring photos of your work on a CD or a flash drive.  We will have a “movie night” complete with popcorn and your portfolios will be the featured entertainment.
Come with a concept sketch, design idea, piece of fabric or photo which can be used as a starting point for the decorative tile piece you will create during the retreat.  This does not have to be elaborate or fully developed.  It could be inspired by a painting that you love or a color pallet that goes with your kitchen or bathroom.  If you wish to make a piece that fits into a pre-existing space, bring measurements and if possible, photos of the surrounding area.  What I am looking for here is the kernel of an idea to use as a springboard for your project.

How many hours a day can I work in the studio?

As many as you wish, the studio will be open 24 hours a day.
